The bedside of the current church of Valençay, going back to the 15th century, is not other than the old church of a priory Benedictine devoted to Notre-Dame. She was dedicated to Saint-Martin, after the disappearance of the parish church, ruined with the Revolution, located at the site of the Market.

In 1836, on the plans of its Vestier architect, Talleyrand equipped the building with an original bell-tower, inspired by that of the Church of Saint-Martin of Vevey (Swiss) and that the Prince had had the occasion to admire at the time of his stay in Switzerland, in October 1825.

It is only between 1860 and 1880 that the left side, the high-altar and the principal frontage of the church were built. Inside, two interesting fabrics, namely, a Nativity and a Crucifixion, the latter, work of Boissard de Boisdenier was formerly the ornament of the room of “Justice de Paix”. As for the portrait of Saint-Ferdinand, king of Castille and of Leon, work of Jobbé Duval, it replaced the original, destroyed by an accidental fire.
